Grounding is an important part of any electrical system. Protecting expensive equipment from damage due to a build up of static electricity and aiding to protect your system in the event of a lightning strike. Having proper grounding is the best insurance that you can buy to protect yourself against these dangers. Proper grounding also provides a path for fault current to be dissappated and allow breakers and fuses to trip in the event of a fault.
This kit includes all the parts and pieces necessary for the successful grounding and lightning protection of your renewable energy system. The Canadian Electrical Code states that the your ground cable must be as large as the biggest conductor in your system, generally the cables connecting the batteries together are the largest conductors in your system, customize your ground kit accordingly. If you have 4/0 battery cables then you'll need 4/0 copper wire for your ground cable and a 4/0 Lug to connect the ground cable to the battery negative.
This ground kit includes a ground plate which makes the grounding point in the system much easier to install. A code compliant ground plate is only 10" x 16" and buried 24" deep in moist ground. It is often a good idea to dig the hole for your ground plate and then see how much wire you'll need as it is very easy to find a rock that will thwart your decided upon location. Remember that your power system should have only one grounding point that will be shared by the DC grounding and AC grounding each with their own clamp connection to the ground plate.
If you have copper propane pipe or copper water pipe that is longer then 10' this also needs to be bonded to ground. This kit includes 2 clamps for this purpose.
If you are grounding a system that has a DC175 or DC250 in the system you can simplify your life considerably by purchasing a negative bonding block (DCBB). This bonding block installs into the DC enclosure and give you an easy place to draw all the negative leads from the system together before connecting to the ground cable.
For added protection in the case of direct lightning strike consider installing an AC lightning arrestor and a DC lightning arrestor. Generally the DC side lightning is the more important as the DC charging devices are generally those that are more likely to be struck by lightning.
