Microhydro power is the most cost effective way to generate power if you have a suitable resource. A small stream flowing down a mountain has potential to generate more than enough power to provide those living off grid with all the power you require for all your lighting, electronics, water pumping, washing machine and power tools to boot.
Power production depends on a number of influences, but the most important is the flow of water that you are able to divert and the change in elevation from the source pond to the turbine. With these two numbers we can make a good estimate of how much power you will be able to produce.
The microhydro generator included in this kit is the Energy Systems and Design Stream Engine. These hydro generators use a bronze turgo runner that will give you long life and worry free operation. The Stream Engine is field configurable for 12, 24 or 48 volts, so that regardless of your site or battery bank the unit will be a good fit. The Stream Engine can handle water flows of 10-150 gpm and 20-500 feet of head. The turbine can produce up to 45kWh/day!
This system comes with a pure sine wave inverter with a built in automatic transfer switch and battery charger. The battery charger will allow you to connect a generator for extra charging if the turbine does not meet your needs.
The battery bank in this system is smaller than what you would expect in a renewable energy system due to the fact that generally a microhydro system will provide enough power to quickly recharge the system and consequently a large battery bank isn't required. That being said, if you will be using a larger inverter it is smart to double the size of the battery bank to assist the batteries in providing the required surge current. The battery bank is made up of 2 Volt 665 Ah Deep Cycle batteries that generally last for 15-20 years with proper maintenance.
The inverter and most of the electrical components are built onto a steel back plate. This makes installation a snap and drastically reduces the amount of wiring needed to bring power to your home. The power panel will allow you to easily add a second inverter at a later date to double your capacity and have access to 240V power.
