The IQ Smart Controller offers automatic charging control for the DLS power converters/chargers to provide longer and safer use of your system's battery. The IQ Controller is compatible with any DLS model, and is covered under our standard Two-Year Warranty.

The IQ Controller allows the DLS charger to operate as an automatic 3-stage "smart charger". This gives the customer the benefit of Bulk, Absorption, and Float stage charging, increasing the charging capacity of the DLS charger and decreasing charge times, insuring proper and safe battery charging and minimizing over-charging. This "smart" technology monitors the battery at all times. If the DLS voltage remains in the long term float stage for more than 7 days, the IQ will automatically deliver a boost charge for a predetermined time, then automatically return to the normal float stage.

Bulk Charge
The batteries are charged with the full rated output of the DLS charger. During this stage, the batteries are recharged quickly to reduce charge times. The batteries will stay in this bulk stage of charging until the voltage reaches 14.8VDC and then drop into the Absorption stage.

Absorption Charge
The batteries are then held in the absorption stage for a controlled period of 8 hours, insuring a full and complete charge. During this stage, the battery cells are charged to 14.2 VDC (for 12V systems) for increased capacity. After 8 hrs of charging at 14.2V, the batteries will drop into the float stage to prevent overcharging.

Float Charge
During the float stage, the DLS charge voltage is reduced to 13.6V. This minimizes gassing, while maintaining a full charge. If the battery voltage drops below 12.6 VDC (for 12V systems), the IQ Controller will restart at the bulk charge stage and repeat this cycle.

Weekly Boost
If the batteries have not received a "smart charge" during a 7-day period, the IQ Controller will switch the DLS charger into a preprogrammed, charge stage to top off the batteries. This ensures full batteries all of the time without over-charging.

Generator Charging
When charging from a generator, you do not need the float stage and when the IQ4 goes into float charging (check the LED indicator), you should turn off the generator. However, this does not mean your batteries are at full charge. Since the absorption charging is based on time (8 hrs), some batteries could be charged in less time and some batteries may need to have more charging. It is very important to make sure you have a rough idea of how long it will take to charge your batteries, so that you can time the charging cycle and turn your generator off early for small batteries or restart the charging cycle for large battery banks. You can only restart the charging cycle if the battery voltage is below 12.8V. It may be necessary to wait a little while with a load on the system to remove the temporary surface charge from your batteries (up to 14V).
